The Viral Ad Network is growing rapidly (yay!) and that means we are looking to add to our Bristol-based publisher team.

This is an extremely important part of VAN that looks after our bloggers and website owners; providing them with great ad campaigns that pay them well, and ultimately providing our advertisers with views for their campaigns on awesome sites.

So what’s the job like:

This is a great way to get started in the industry. You get to work on great campaigns for big clients, and you’ll pick up key skills in account management, planning, media buying and reporting. We hope you’ll stick around for a couple of years, but we’ll train you in ways that give you a great preparation to step up to your next position (whether it’s internal or external).

The role has three key responsibilities:

Help build our network of quality online publishers

Support the campaign management team with delivery of clients campaigns

Support the sales team with publisher input for pitching

In detail…

Researching and recruiting publishers and bloggers from desired categories to sign up to the network

Assessing and processing incoming publisher signups.

Categorising publisher inventory to aid campaign planning and pitching

Expanding VAN’s profile across key social media platforms – tweet, blog, get involved…

Help to grow VAN’s publisher community with relevant marketing & events.

Ensure VAN publisher inventory meets individual campaign targets.

What you’re like:

This is a job for people who:

Are comfortable with numbers, especially straightforward arithmetic.

Enjoy talking to people by phone and email to develop relationships.

Work hard (cliche, but true here). It’s a job where you need to get your tasks done to time. It can also be necessary to check campaign progress out of office hours (using online systems).

Have solid writing skills: we don’t have time to check your spelling etc, and we’re working with publishers who may judge us negatively if you can’t write clearly and accurately.

The type of work is fairly consistent and suits someone who is happy to do similar tasks on a daily basis. That said, the job is exciting: new opportunities come up, new relationships will be formed, we get sales wins and awesome content to seed, and campaigns need to get their views.

You will definitely need:

A genuine desire to get stuck into work and take responsibility.

A passion for online publishing. You need to be an active consumer of digital, and experience writing or running a blog would be great.

Previous work experience, this can be anything dealing with people or a task based role. It doesn’t have to be relevant to marketing or online, but we don’t have time to teach you the most basic professional and get-things-done skills.

Salary and progression

Within the role, you can progress from ‘novice’ to ‘ninja’. This would take a couple of years. A complete novice starts on £14.4k, and a ninja would get around £25k.

There’s healthy profit share on top for all staff (linked to company performance), and a success club (team rewards for making monthly sales target).

There’s a wide range of progression opportunities when it’s time to move on from this role. There may be opportunities to move up within VAN taking management responsibility for aspects of sales or operations, or moving elsewhere within the Team Rubber group. It’s also a great stepping stone into agencies or client-side marketing, giving a solid grounding in account management, media planning and buying, and campaign operations.

Interested? To apply mail ally@viraladnetwork.net with a covering letter outlining why you think you are suitable for the position and where your strengths lie along with a 2 page CV.

VAN is recruiting for Bristol-based campaign managers.

What does VAN do?

We seed great viral ads to great sites so people can enjoy and share them.

We work with some of the best ad agencies in the world, generating views and sharing for their brand campaigns, especially their YouTube videos. We’re based in Bristol and London UK.

We’re growing fast, and we offer an outstanding opportunity for graduates or people who are starting their career in marketing, advertising and digital media. It’s a great learning environment.

What’s the job?
This is an awesome way to get started in the industry. You get to work with great clients and great content, and you’ll pick up key skills in account management, pitching, planning, media buying and reporting. We hope you’ll stick around for a couple of years, but we’ll train you in ways that give you a great preparation to step up to your next position.

The role has a clear structure, with three key responsibilities:

Supporting our sales team by preparing proposals for clients.

Setting up campaigns and making media bookings with our network of publishers.

Account management and reporting to our clients.

In detail…

Supporting our sales team
Our London-based sales team deal with the majority of client meetings, and pitching.
You’ll need to write proposal documents to support them. These need to be turned around quickly and accurately, and be sensitive to the client’s specific needs.
You will not be required to cold sell in this role, but you will need to work with the rest of the team to achieve the monthly sales target.
You will need to develop and close warm leads that come in directly by phone or email.
Developing account relationships and retaining clients by providing consistently good service is essential for sales.

Campaign Operations (daily)
It’s critical that we meet our promises to clients, getting them the views they need in the agreed timeframe.
You’ll need to plan and book media placements for campaigns, working with the rest of the team to make sure that we deliver on all client campaigns. The campaign needs to be monitored for progress throughout, and action taken to resolve any issues.
We report progress to clients using a dashboard system during the campaign then delivering a final report at the end. You’ll need to ensure the dashboard is up to date, and produce the final report (we have standard formats for doing this).
Where necessary, you’ll need to develop and maintain relationships with publishers directly to make sure that campaigns meet their targets.

Client handling & sales (daily)
Account management duties, including:

Responding to client requests by phone and email.

Maintaining the agency-client relationship throughout campaigns.

Reporting and following up on campaigns

Developing relationships to drive repeat business.

Additional responsibilities
Occasionally you’ll need to assisting with marketing, including prep of campaign case studies.
We improve the product and service continuously, looking for more efficiency and better results for our clients. You’ll need to contribute to this & work quickly to adopt changes and improvements.

_____________________________________________________________________

What you’re like
This is a job for people who:

Are comfortable with numbers, especially straightforward arithmetic.

Enjoy talking to people by phone and email to develop relationships.

You will definitely need:

A good degree. Everybody here has proven themselves.

A genuine desire to get stuck into work and take responsibility.

I’m leaving and we’re hiring.

So what has it been like to work as campaign manager for VAN?

* You will work with some truly intelligent, witty and welcoming people. I have been taught a lot, made to laugh and and kept on my toes.
* The role has clear structure and you have the satisfaction running seeding campaigns from start to finish. You will be involved in sales, agreements, client handling, media buying and final reports.
* You will work with some incredibly popular brands and some high profile agencies.
* You will be kept up-to-date with all the latest funny and fascinating virals.
* You get a sexy MacBook you can take home in the evenings and weekends. Sweet.

What do you need to enjoy being a campaign manager?
* An understanding and love for Twitter, LinkedIn, blogging, Google Analytics etc. If you don’t have this now, you soon will.
* Good verbal and written communication
* Ability to manage time.
* A drive to hit target.

I have loved working for VAN, I am not entirely sure the realisation that I am leaving next month has actually sunken in yet to be honest. I have been part of the VAN team for a year now and Team Rubber for nearly five, and I can truthfully say I have loved it. I will be taking away some fantastic skills, knowledge and happy memories. Fortunately though, I am only moving around the corner so the guys at Rubber Towers won’t be getting away from me that easily.

Publisher Recruitment Hero

This job is being filled with the help of the UWE Graduate Internships Scheme. So before your lovely eyes read any further you need to answer yes to this question: did you graduate in the last 2 years?

If you answered yes, go for it, read away. If you answered no, have a look anyway because even though you’ll not be eligible for this role you may know somebody who is

You’ve spent some time studying and have become really good at or passionate about or engaged with a specialist skill. It might be that you’re:
- Highly numerate and analytical
- Great at selling stuff, love talking to people
- Methodical, organised, rigorous

How about getting paid to apply your skill(s) working for an interesting, creative, smart, well-run media company that will improve you as a professional without requiring you to wear a suit?

Tasks will be based around the following areas of responsibility:
- Researching and recruiting publishers and bloggers from key verticals to sign up to the Viral Ad Network
- Categorising publisher inventory to aid campaign planning and pitching processes
- Expanding VAN’s profile across key social media platforms – tweet, blog, get involved…
- Maintain and grow VAN’s publisher community.
- Ensuring VAN publisher inventory meets campaign targets

What you’re like
You’re probably not well-rounded (because it’s hard to be exceptional at everything). However, no matter how remarkable your talent, you will definitely need:
- A good degree. Everybody here has proven themselves academically or in the workplace. Being a graduate, you haven’t had a proper job yet so you’ll need the degree.
- A genuine desire to get stuck into the world of work, do something, make good stuff, take responsibility.
- A passion for all things digital and social. You should already be active on social media spaces, and writing a blog would be a bonus!
- An exceptional talent. We’ve got a great team in place but we’re always on the lookout for more match-winners.

Interested? To apply mail ally@viraladnetwork.net with a covering letter outlining why you think you are suitable for the position and where your strengths lie along with a 2 page CV.

Following on from my previous post on how your profile can be used as a marketing tool, I have recently encountered an interesting use of this…

http://oneideaaday.tumblr.com/

A job-hunting junior strategic planner will be posting an ‘idea a day’ on his tumblr until someone hires him. This is a great example of someone marketing themselves as a brand. It shows that he gets social media (each idea is under 140 characters so can be tweeted) and the ideas vary between medium so potentially appeal to lots of different branches of advertising.

I am looking forward to following his plight. It will be interesting to see if his ideas stay at a similar standard, get worse if he loses his inspiration for the project, or if they get better as he gets feedback and finds a more efficient creative route!

Good luck Nathanael!

I just got sent an interesting request from a friend of mine – he’s applying for a job and as part of the application process he’s been asked to film a job interview talking about the company, put it on YouTube, and drive traffic to it to see who can get the most views.

The result is that thousands of people will be getting emails from friends asking them to watch a video of one of their friends recommending the company (great way to mix viral marketing and word of mouth!)

You can seem my friend Alex telling the worst joke ever here. (it’s worth it – it’s about dwarfs)
